Florence and the colleague of Saint John the Baptist III part

09 Jul Florence and the colleague of Saint John the Baptist III part

…after. July 26, 1343 is indeed the day devoted to St. Anne. Thus Mary’s mother was elevated to the dignity of first Florentine citizen next to the most famous Patron Saint John the Baptist. The image of Saint John the Baptist spreads everywhere in Florence but after this decisive date he had to share religious and civil public spaces with his colleague Anne. The most famous of these images is the altarpiece entitled St. Anne Metterza, painted in collaboration by Masaccio and Masolino for the Church of St. Ambrogio in Florence, and today preserved in one of the rooms of the Gallery of offices. However, there is a special place in town that keeps and houses two images at the same time of this saint. This place is quite special for us Florentines and it is known by the very strange name of Orsanmichele.
